Gaines and published in 1993. The telling is about the black Jefferson who sits innocent in prison and who will be executed by the electric chair. The storyteller Grant teaches Jefferson in this period of his life to be a man and to die with honor. During the hole story there are three black women, who has got a big impact on the male protagonists Jefferson and Grant. Tante Lou and Miss Emma have got an impact on Jefferson and Grant because they mother them. The girlfriend from Grant who calls Vivian gives Grant a reason to continue with living and with helping the black boy Jefferson in prison. All this black women have got a positive impact on Jefferson and Grant and help them in a difficult period of life, although their life isn't the easiest. I will talk about the figure Vivian in general. Afterwards I will present her impact on her boyfriend Grant and then I will show how the interactions from the three women Tante Lou, Miss Emma and Vivian reflect the roles of black women within their families and in African- American society. At last, I would like to talk about the qualities which Vivian represent in the novel „A Lesson before Dying". By talking about Vivian in general, it's absolutely important to know that Vivian is the beautiful, smart and loving girlfriend from Grant. This woman is teacher for black children at a religious school in Bayonne like Grant. On top of that, she takes care about her boyfriend Grant and helps him in difficult life situations. She is still married with her ex-husband, but a divorce is planed. She wants to be a couple with Grant, but she has got also two children with her ex-husband. By describing the relationship between Vivian and Grant you can see that her relationship to Grant is a secret for Vivian. She is scared that her ex- husband takes the children away for this reason. In the book it becomes 2 clear, that Vivian is convinced that Grant will never leave his region, although he says that's his dream: "I don't like it; I hate it. I don't even like living here. I want to run away. I want to live for myself and for my woman and for nobody else" (p. 182 I. 1ff.). For this reason, Grant doesn't feel serious in Vivian's presence, but Vivian also feels under pressure, because Grant wants to leave Bayonne only with her together. Additionally, Grant doesn't want to lose Vivian, they have got a very strong love (p. 89/91). As reader, you can see their strong feelings here: “1 thought every bit of her was perfect“ (p. 88 I. 25). "She looked up at me, and she could read my face, and she knew that I had been at the jail", so Vivian knows Grant inside out. They have got a strong relationship. Another proof of love is that Vivian is always there for Grant no matter he is sad or happy. Now I would like to continue with the topic: „What impact has got Vivian on Grant". I will present a passage of the novel and then I show the impact which is given. In chapter four, on page 24 in I. 27f. you can see Grant's addiction to Vivian. ,,I needed to be with someone. I needed to be with Vivian". There is an anaphora given: „I needed to be with... I needed to be with...." which shows that Grant really needs Vivian in this moment of his life and emphasizes Grant's dependence to this woman. By analyzing you can notice that Grant is reliant on Vivian, because she has a reassuring impact to him. So when Grant is sad or confused, he seeks sanctuary by Vivian. Another impact is presented in chapter four, on page 28 in 1. 20-30: "You want to go home and pack your clothes and get the children and leave from here tonight?". "No, some people can, but we can't. We're teachers, and we have a commitment." Grant doesn't want to continue living in Bayonne. He wants to realize his dreams and start a new life, but Vivian tells him the truth with all the facts and shows him the right way". In this moment Vivian takes Grant's dream away and forbids his plan. So she has got the power to decide about Grant's life. 3 Grant wants to move away, where he can live free and hasn't got any commitments and he wants that only with one person - Vivian. For this reason he stays in Bayonne and waits for the divorce between Vivian and her husband (chapter 4, p. 29 1. 8 - 29). The impact is here that Vivian can decide about Grant's dreams and his living place. That means that she says what is allowed for Grant and what is not. Furthermore Vivian has got a positive impact of Grant's feelings: "I needed Vivian closer to me than she was now, and asked her if she wanted to dance. ...and now I felt very good“ (chapter 4, p. 30 l. 6 - 10). It's clearly showed that only Vivian makes Grant happy and distracts him from his worries. Grant tells, that he has to visit Jefferson in the jail und explains his despair, but Vivian wants him to do that: "I want you to go up there". "If they say yes, I want you to go for me“ (chapter 4, p. 30f. I. 18 - 26). In this way Vivian persuades Grant to visit Jefferson, although Grant is afraid. This woman cheers up Grant und gives him strength: „I know you can". So Vivian is the power, who pushes Grant to visit and help Jefferson. Grant still want to go away and to start a new life, but Vivian is still afraid: „Yes, Grant, you would hate me for letting you make this decision. Or I would hate you for doing it. I'm not doing any good up there, Vivian, I said. Nothing changing“ (chapter 18, p. 134 I. 1 - 12). As reader you can see that Vivian contradicts Grant in every situation. She takes Grant his dream away, because he stays only for her in Bayonne. However she is the reason that he helps his aunt, Miss Emma and Jefferson, without Vivian he would not do this. Grant doesn't do anything without the permission of Vivian, that's a fact. When the date for Jefferson's execution was set Vivian cares about Grant. "After I heard about it, I knew I had to see you, she said. I'm glad you came" (chapter 21, p. 154 l. 19 - 22). Grant's girlfriend gives him feelings after safety and security and helps him in this difficult period of his life. 4 Moreover Vivian talked with Miss Emma and cheered her up: “I told her I was praying for both of them, Vivian said. That's the best thing you could have said" (chapter 21, p. 158 l. 19f.). This passage emphasizes that the hole life of Grant is important for Vivian. So she also cares about Miss Emma. The impact is that Grant's girlfriend is kind-hearted and influence Grant's family positive. Because of Vivian Miss Emma feels better in this passage. In addition Vivian has sympathy for Grant and accept his life. So he doesn't have to keep something secret from her. You can see that in this passage: "Between him and school, I was drained of my energy. Vivian knew that too, and she was ready to accept it" (chapter 25, p. 186 I. 16 ff.). As well there are another lines which show an impact of Vivian on Grant. Grant had a brawl in the Rainbow Club and for this reason Vivian takes Grant with her at home to care about him. Although Grant refuse her help, she continues and gets in trouble. However Grant doesn't want her in any trouble. With the sentence: „Well, you should have thought about that at the Rainbow Club“ (chapter 26, p. 194 I. 6 - 36) Vivian tries to bring up Grant and shows him the right way“. It emphasizes that Vivian feels obliged to Grant and mothers him. Finally there was Jefferson's execution and Grant thinks about Vivian during this terrible time. “I wished I could telephone Vivian, but... I would see her tonight, though. I would definitely see her tonight. I need to see you tonight, my love“ (chapter 31, p. 235 l. 28 - 321). So only through Vivian, Grant can bear the hole situation. On top of that there is an anaphora given: „I would…“. This stylistic device emphasizes that he really need to see her at the same day. It is showed that Grant is very reliant on Vivian and wants to hear her voice. That is a positive impact, because Vivian would be there for Grant in each situation of life. To sum up it can be said that Vivian is a strong shoulder for Grant. She knows always what is the best for Grant, she shows him the „right way“ and helps him in each life situation. It is interesting to know that Vivian is the reason why Grant is strong and doesn't give up. An example is the 5
