Phrases for analysing a Cartoon
EF English Step I (Introduction) A cartoon is a comic or satirical drawing in a newspaper, a magazine or on the Internet that aims at humorously criticizing current, and especially political, events. It usually consists of a drawing (pictorial part) and speech balloons and a comment or a caption, which is most frequently placed underneath (textual part). However, all the elements are not necessarily used in each cartoon. Step 2 (Description): Describe the picture in a short paragraph. Step 3 (Analysis): Examine the elements and their function. What messages do they convey? Pay special attention to the characters. (main visual/textual elements -> effects) Useful phrases for analysing a cartoon Step 4 (Evaluation): Do you agree with the message of the cartoon?
