ELLIS ISLAND U What is Ellis island Ellis Island is a historical site that opened in 1892 as an immigration station, a purpose it served for more than 60 years until it closed in 1954. Located at the mouth of Hudson River between New York and New Jersey, Ellis Island saw millions of newly arrived immigrants pass through its doors. In fact, it has been estimated that close to 40 percent of all current U.S. citizens can trace at least one of their ancestors to Ellis Island. How does people get there The people were transported with a ship to Ellis Island, wich could take up to 2 weeks. First and second class passengers had their own cabins while everyone else stayed in the bottom of the ship called steerage.Steerage passengers payed 30$ for the ticket, but first and second class passengers paid even more money.Steerage was overcrowded and had no privacy at all, with shared sleeping compartments. First and second class were processed to usa without Ellis Island. The other people waited for a ferries to get them to Ellis Island U What happened then? Then the immigrants passed through the Medicinal test. Anyone who was considered as a public risk would be taken out. After that the immigrants went on to a legal inspection, the most people then could go to America. The other 2% were sent back What can you do...
