Figure constellation Mother Mama Mother Walter Siblings Beneatha Son Spouese Travis Ruth Son WALTER characterization The book "The raisin in the Sun" was written in 1995 by Lofraine Hansberry and deals with Black Americans who live in a little flat in Chicago. He is one of the main characters and is 35 years old and the father of Travis and Ruth's husband. Walter is not a happy person and looks very depressef, because he sees his future stretched out in front of him and he thinks that his life is full of nothing (p.113 1. 2-3, 6). Also he wants to have a life and money like young white boys. So he ist not happy with his life (p.113 1. 6-12). Therefore he has a naive world view,because he tries to reach something he cannot get. But he doesn't want to talk about his problems and bis life, because he gets up when Mama wants to talk with him, because she saw the last years that not all is okay with Walter (p.111 1. 12,13). So he doesn't show his emotions and feelings (p.111 1. 8-12) and doesn't want somebody to meddle in his life (p.113 l. 14,15), but he prefers to cover his problems with alcohol, because it is difficult to deal with it. Also he is very unsatisfied with his job, because he has to do the same all the time (p. 111 I. 23-27) and he doesn't. trust his wife Ruth, because he thinks that Ruth does nothing for him. But this is not correct, because Ruth contradicts.. As a conclusion you can say he is an introverted and self-centred person who has lots of problems, feels misunderstood and alone, because he deals with his problems on his own or with alcohol. They live in a little flat. Ruth comes home from the doctor and she says that she is pregnant in the second month. The baby is okay. At the same time Travis plays outside and Ruth hears some noise and sees that · Travis is trying cath a rat. So she is very loud and calls that he has to come upstairs. Then Asagai rings at the door. This is a friend from Beneatha from university and he comes from Nigeria. Asagai has a present for Beneatha. She gets records and robes of a Nigerian woman and she is very happy and goes to the mirror with the drapery. Than Asagai leaves. And Walter comes home, asking at first if the money has come. He says that he wants to have a liquor store and Mama is of the opinion that he shouldn't speak about that again. So nobody doesn't want to talk about it. Then Walter wants to go out and Ruth wants to come with him, but he doesn't want it and Mama holds him back and wants to talk with him. She thinks that he shouldn't only think about money and liquor all the time and says that he has lots of things in his life, like a good job, good wife, freedom and a good look But Walter doesn't like his job. After he gets the information that Ruth gets a second baby he thinks that she wouldn't do everything for his family. But Ruth would do this. So Mama is very disappointed of him.
