Melting pot: • metaphor by Jean de Crèvecoeur which states that people of different cultures are mixed together into one culture, that is better and more variable • Different from the salad bowl - original ingredients can not be keept apart anymore • Pro: - strong common sense - all of the different cultures are blended and integrated into American culture (e.g music, food, religion) - increase standard of living - provides indigenous people with skills to succeed - universally accepted set of values - equality • Con: - social pressure to adapt - some people do not want to adapt to a specific cultur and shed their own - no cultural diversity - differences often not respected -> less tolerant of other ethnics - loss of values, characteristics and ideals -enforces the English language Salad bowl: • metaphor which states that a mixture of people with different cultures (ingredients) can still be identified • A group retains important characteristics and behaviors of their own culture and only takes over some of the features of different groups. • Pro: cutural diversity (multiple traditions, festivals etc.) cultural heritage does not have to be abandoned to be considered American able to understand diffrent cultures etc. • Con: - one culture often sets itself apart from another (different ethnic city districts such as chinatown etc.) -> therefore little to no cultural diversity common culture...
