Savanna Types and Characteristics
The savanna biome is divided into three main types based on precipitation levels and vegetation characteristics. These are the Feuchtsavanne (wet savanna), Trockensavanne (dry savanna), and Thornbush savanna.
Feuchtsavanne (Wet Savanna):
The Feuchtsavanne receives the highest amount of precipitation, exceeding 1,000 mm annually. This abundant rainfall supports a diverse range of vegetation, including green tropical forests that shed their foliage during the dry season, and shrubs and low trees that retain their leaves year-round. The Feuchtsavanne Vegetation is characterized by broad-leaf plants and tall elephant grass reaching 2-5 meters in height.
Highlight: A unique feature of the Feuchtsavanne is the presence of gallery forests along rivers, sustained by year-round water supply.
The dry season in the Feuchtsavanne lasts for 5-7 months, which is shorter compared to other savanna types.
Trockensavanne (Dry Savanna):
The Trockensavanne experiences moderate precipitation, ranging from 500 to 1,000 mm annually. The Trockensavanne Vegetation primarily consists of grasslands with heights varying from 60 cm to 1.5 meters. Tree population in this region is sparse. The dry season in the Trockensavanne is shorter than in the wet savanna, lasting 3-5 months.
Vocabulary: Trockensavanne - A type of savanna characterized by moderate rainfall and predominantly grassland vegetation.
Thornbush Savanna:
The Thornbush savanna, also known as Dornstrauchsavanne, receives the least amount of precipitation, less than 500 mm annually. Despite the low rainfall, the grass cover in this region remains unbroken, distinguishing it from semi-desert landscapes. The vegetation in the Thornbush savanna is adapted to arid conditions, with grasses reaching a maximum height of knee-level.
Example: The Trockensavanne Niederschlag (dry savanna precipitation) is higher than that of the Thornbush savanna, resulting in taller grasses and more diverse vegetation.
Trees in the Thornbush savanna are isolated, and the landscape is dominated by thornbushes and thorntrees, particularly acacias. The dry season in this region is the longest among all savanna types, lasting more than 7 months.
Definition: Savanne Steckbrief - A profile or characteristic summary of savanna ecosystems, including information on climate, vegetation, and geographical distribution.
This overview of savanna types provides insight into the diverse ecosystems within the broader savanna biome, highlighting how precipitation levels influence vegetation patterns and seasonal changes across different regions.
