If you so crazy bout messing round with sick people - then go be anruße like other woman - or just get married and be quiet" (p. 68) ==> lack of understanding Walter does not believe in Beneatha different way of thinking - Walter still thinks very old-fashioned as was normal at the time of the drama - Beneatha is generally a different personality: emancipation, woman`s liberation, independence, she wants a career and not just be a married woman who cleans everyday the house and cares about the children's between Mama and Beneatha > Beneatha is trying to find a way to express herself, but her mother does not understand this need and why she keeps trying different things > Mama and Ruth makes fun about her (p. 80) ==> lack of understanding => huge age difference - generation gap different ways of life ==> they thinks is just a another crazy idea or phase of Beneatha > Mama is shocked when Beneatha tells her that she might not marry because her career is more important to her - Mama thinks to marry a man is the way of life and one of the important things on the planet (p. 83) ==> lack of understanding different ways of life emancipation ==> disappointment Generation gap > Mama is very religious and has raised her children in her belief > that is why she is outraged when her daughter says that God does not help them at all - because of the living conditions and the financial situation ==> religion/ Mamas belief of god ==> lack of understanding different values traditions different ways of life disappointment intolerance ==> generation gap ATMOSPHERE-LIVING CONDITIONS small, old, run down and ugly apartment which is not intended for a family of 5 people > have to share the bathroom with the neighbors down the hallway > just two bedrooms - Ruth and Walter share one room - Beneatha and Mama share one Travis has to sleep on the couch in the living room one window small kitchen area > not much space and privacy - stressful - hectic - tense - annoying - frustrated - not enough privacy - everyday and the most of the time they are together and after a time this can be very stressful - especially with a child it can be loud and hectic - everyone is not happy with the life situation and that they have to live in this apartment = in this way more more unhappiness, sadness and longing (longing for a better life) builds up after a fight, the family cannot split up into different rooms to calm down because of the lack of space more and more tension builds up - especially Ruth is totally unhappy with this life - reacts very tense to things from Walter p. 51 Ruth makes the breakfast for the family - its just the morning and Walter and Ruth argue = tense, distant, unhappy, annoyed although their relationship is not very loving, they know the other person really good - you can see that in the scene where Ruth makes the eggs for Walter - she knows exactly what Walter means by "scrambled eggs" Walter wants to loosen up the tension: he want to make love with her - Ruth does not go into it - Walter gives up because Ruths reaction is really angry and annoyed
