Analysis Michelle Obama Speech
Analysis: On 4th of September in 2019, First Lady Michelle Obama delivered a political speech concerning the American dream. In order to convince the audience and keep their attention she uses a specific line of argument, stylistic devices and communicative strategies. Michelle Obama begins by explaining that she as the First Lady, has the privilege the meet many people across the hole country and talk to them about their life and experiences. She states, that these people all represent values which are important for her and her husband. By that she gives insights into her private life at side of the US-president Barack Obama and their two daughters. She uses this as a communicative strategy to reach her listeners on a personal level because it does not intent to act purely economically or politically. In addition to that, she makes use of alliterations like "“I've met...“, “I've gone…“ (II. 5-6) which illustrate her experiences on the topic of the American dream. She wants the audience to know that her husband and her have lived the American dream themselves and that they made it from the bottom to the top as well. This gives the listeners a feeling of being upliftet and unsterstood. To support an emotional bond to her audience, Michelle Obama uses inclusive pronouns like “us“...

The people feel taken up and are able to follow her thoughts better. Moreover, she mentions her husband and his qualities a lot during her hole speech. She mentions, that she and her husband learned about e.g. "honesty and dignity" (1. 79) and "gratitude and humility“ (1.84). These are values that Michelle and Barack Obama, as well as their audience represent and try to pass on to their children. She does this with the intention to convince the audience that her husband is the suitable person to vote for them to achieve their American dream. All in all, Michelle Obama shares a lot of personal experience in her speech. She attracts wide public attention to the American Dream while wanting to gain voters for her husband.
