Analysis The speech of Leonardo DiCaprio, delivered at the United Nations climate summit in 2016, illustrates the urgency of taking action to stop or at least slow down the effects of climate change. The speech can be divided into five parts. Mr. DiCaprio introduces the topic by alluding to a speech of former President Abraham Lincoln, who was also taking action "to confront the defining issue of his time- slavery" (II. 14-15). The speaker uses this allusion in order to persuade his audience, while comparing this issue to the crisis of our time and underlining that change is needed. In the second part DiCaprio goes on by providing examples of climate change, he has experienced himself. a result of human activity. This argument leads into a prediction, which may scare people, to convince them to act now. "[...] the effects of climate change will become astronomically worse in future"(II. 41-42). In the following part DiCaprio directly addresses his audience: "[...] you know what will happen if this scourge is left unchecked. You know that climate change is happening [...]" (II.45-47). This could also be interpreted as a method of persuasion, since he tells them that they already think the same way as he does about that issue. The 4th part of the speech deals with the measures which are "[...] required right now." (II.86-87). DiCaprio employees that alliteration, to point out the urgency of taking action and making it more memorable. To Enhance this effect, the speaker utilizes an ellipsis, which is directed to the world leaders: "no more excuses" (II. 98-99). These few words bring out what's essential to the topic. Mr. DiCaprio finishes his speak, the same way he started it by using a quote from Abraham Lincoln, which despite of being an allusion, includes a contrast: "in honour or dishonour" (II.111-112). This mean puts two possibilities, on how present can evolve, in contrast. typen
