general information capital: Abuja biggest city: Lagos used to be British Colony people: 250 ethic groups, 500 languages religion: 50% Muslim, 48% Christian rapidly growing population (3rd highest youth population) country of contradiction: -biggest economy in Africa-poorest country in the world -low education standards-many talented people -Nigerians are critics & supporters of their country problems & challenges -poverty (huge gap between rich and poor) -climate change (environmental disasters e.g. strong rain destroys infrastructure) -hunger -inequality between men and women -crime, terrorism (book haram, North, child soldiers ), police brutality -child labour (no education-no way out), slavery -religious tension -rapidly growing population -odds against Nigerians (67& below poverty line, violence, life expectancy 53, no health care, no constant electricity, little education, much unemployment) -society without justice and moral->willing to do anything to fulfill Nigerian Dream -corrupt politicians: money should be used for people Lagos -largest city (around 15 million citizens) & 2nd largest city in Africa -rich&developed - poor&undeveloped side -over 60% lives in slums NIGERIA chances -great culture diversity -creative scene-growing economy (Nollywood) -country full of opportunities & potential (especially youth) -strong and active women fighting for their rights -people take their chances to evolve -aware of their problems -rising nation -increasing wealth Sh The Nigerian Dream "social upward mobility due to hard work, the possibility to lead a fulfilling life" "to make it..." -burning desire to be successful -succeed against all odds stacked against them -full of motivation and ambition -not only survive but thrive "... by any means necessary" -willing to enter rat race=relentless competition...
