Is Shakespeare still relevant today ? Pros and Cons
Shakespeare relevance today? pros his characters share human values and characteristics that everyone deals with learning about his literature means learning about life and our lives it is a preparation to deal with the complexity of life the views in the plays open new horizons especially to younger generations Shakespeare asks us to step out of our comfort zone and face standards Shakespeare profoundly influenced the English language (more than 3000 word have a direct link to Shakespeare, influenced other writers and poets); his language is considered English tradition his plays are to be interpreted in various ways, therefore they never get old (as are his themes e.g. love, hate, revenge etc) cons Shakespeare deals with social problems, hierarchies etc from former times (not very contemporary the language is different from our times--> difficult to understand Why read Shakespeare if there are current writer that deal with the same topics but are easier to understand? The plays could be irrelevant to younger people and their future lives due to diversity there are no stage directions in the plays, we do not know how the plays were really presented back in the days. So why should we even bother? gender roles are different today, which makes the concept of certain plays invalid back in the days the plays were new and with unknown ending
