cartoon analysis Brexit
Cartoon analysis The cartoon without a title by ... depicts Britain's position about Brexit. The cartoonist refers to the British pride an exaggerated opinion of themselves. The cartoon's topic is the Brexit. In the centre the half of an airplane with a European flag is shown which symbolizes the European Union and one man, who represents the United Kingdom is holding the flag of the UK and is starting to jump out of the airplane's door, wrongly convinced that the flag will save him from falling. Behind him another man is supposed to be the voice of the European Union and is carrying a parachute which stands for a soft Brexit (with a deal). There are two speech bubbles, one above each man. The speech bubble of the man who represents the EU reads: "Pardon me Sir, may I suggest you take a parachute with you?" and the jumping man is giving the answer "Thanks, the flag will do!" The fact that the UK leaves the European Union is presented in a slight exaggeration with a jump out of an airplane which would lead to horrible bruises or even dead, meaning the United Kingdom damages itself, its international political position and its economy. help and support for the leaving which means the Union is willing to have a soft Brexit and to protect Britain from failure. However the gesture of the British man and the statement of him points out the pride of the UK and its conviction of the country. At first glance one might think that the man jumps and the hard Brexit will be the final solution for Britain, but a closer analysis shows that the man has still one foot in the airplane which means there is still hope for a soft Brexit and the decision is not made yet. All in all, the point the cartoonist is trying to make is to criticize the behaviour of British politicians. He wants to draw their/our attention to the consequences of a hard Brexit and make them aware of the fact that Britain would benefit of a cooperation with the EU. He chieves this by pointing out the exaggerated pride of the British country. In my opinion, the cartoon is effective in its presentation of Britain's failure when it should come to a hard Brexit with no deal, because it refers to the British dependence from the European Union and warns of a premature decision about Brexit. Nonetheless the cartoon might have been more effective if it had featured well-known politicians, e.g. Boris Johnson. PARDON ME SIR, MAY I SUGGEST YOU TO TAKE A PARACHUTE WITH YOU ? 000000 THANKS.
