Conditional Sentences Type 1 and 2
Type 1 Conditionals: Real Possibilities
Type 1 conditionals, also known as If clauses Typ 1, are used to express real possibilities in the present or future. These sentences describe what happens under certain conditions.
Example: If he doesn't stop soon, I'll go crazy!
The structure of Type 1 conditionals is as follows:
- If-clause: Simple Present
- Main clause: Usually Will-Future
Highlight: In the main clause, you can also use can, must, could, should + infinitive, or an imperative.
Example: If Amy doesn't have to go now, she can have lunch with us.
Example: If you miss me, just visit me.
Type 2 Conditionals: Unlikely or Imaginary Situations
If clauses Typ 2 are used to describe unlikely or imaginary situations in the present. These are "What would happen if..." sentences.
Example: If Jane spent more time with her friends, she would be very happy.
The structure of Type 2 conditionals is:
- If-clause: Simple Past
- Main clause: Usually Would + Infinitive
Highlight: In the main clause, you can also use might + infinitive or could + infinitive.
Example: If Lee read this email, he might get angry.
Example: If I were you, I would block him.
