Where did the name come from? The name originated as many different companies in the area produce semiconductors using silicon. Silicon Valley Economic Space Silicon Valley Firms operating in Silicon Valley develop both soft- and hardware. 7000 companies with 500.000 employees generate a yearly revenue of 180 Mrd. $. All this is achieved in a small space of just 4000 km². Silicon Valley has 2.3 million inhabitants. Geographical Location The Silicon Valley is located on the west coast of the USA, South of San Franciso.
