Ausarbeitung
CHARACTERIZATION LADY MACBETH The tragedy "Macbeth" written by William Shakespeare between the years 1605 and 1606 deals with the downfall of the main character Macbeth whose ambition leads him to kill the current king to become king himself. In the following I'm going to characterize Lady Macbeth, the wife of Macbeth, who appears for the first time in Act One, Scene Five, which will serve as the basis for the characterization. After reading Macbeth's letter which described the appearance of the three witches and the prophecy that he will become king, Lady Macbeth gives away her thoughts in a soliloquy. Her thoughts lead to a lot of conclusions about her character traits. Even though Macbeth never revealed his thought about killing King Duncan in his letter, she immediately assumes what needs to be done. She doesn't doubt that her husband shall be king and is very confident that the witches tell the truth: "Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be/What thou art promised;..."( Act 1, Scene 5, line 13-14). Not only her ambition awakens but she also fears that Macbeth's nature of kindness might be in her and his way to become king. position of king and queen over human decency which shows her fundamentally evil character: "yet do I fear thy nature, / It is too full o'th'milk of human kindness / To catch the nearest way" (1.14-16) Killing the king is her "nearest" and most obvious and only way. One can say that she doesn't have a guilty conscience and wouldn't pity the death as long as she and her husband get what she wants. Moreover, Macbeth shouldn't pity the death either. Afraid of Macbeth not full filling the prophecy, she decides to help him with her own ambition and ruthlessness. She doesn't care about Macbeth's thoughts and acts out of selfishness and ambition: "That I may pour my spirits in thine ear / And chastise with the valour of my tong [...]" (1.25-28). After Macbeth arrives, Lady Macbeth immediately starts talking about the future and the prophecy and tries to hassle him into killing the king: "Greater than both by the all-hail hereafter" (1.54). She tells him about her plan that Duncan won't be leaving the castle after his stay at Macbeth's castle and will die. Her manipulative character trait shows in lines 64 to 65 when she tells him to seem innocent but to be a snake and devious. Lady Macbeth herself is devious and tries to influence Macbeth successfully. She doesn't give him time to speak, interrupts him and tells him not to worry because she will take the matter into her own hands (1.70-71). In conclusion, she can be seen as one of the biggest influences on Macbeth because of her fundamentally evil character.
