Macbeth Macbeth is a scottish general who is lead to murderous thoughts by a prophecy. In the beginning, he is described as a brave soldier and fulfills the expectation of masculinity. His response to every problem is violence and murder, but Macbeth is unable to bear the psychological consequences of his actions. Lady Macbeth Macbeth's wife manipulates Macbeth to kill Duncan. she is a deeply ambitious woman who lusts for power and position. Lady Macbeth eventually kills herself after suffering from guilt and madness caused by the bloodshed. Banquo Banquo is described as a brave and nobel general, whose children are supposed to inherit the throne. He represents the path, Macbeth is not choosing to take, a path in which ambition does not lead to murder and betrayal. Duncan Duncan was the good king of Scotland, who was killed by Macbeth in his sleep. His death symbolises the destruction of an order in Scotland, that can only be restored when Malcolm occupies the throne. Macduff Macduff is presented as a noble kinsman and loyal to Duncan. He quickly mistrusts Macbeth. After Macbeth arranges the murder of his family, Macduff is driven by revenge and kills Macbeth. Malcolm Malcom is Duncan's son and King of Scotland, after macbeth is defeated. BIOOD Blood is everywhere in "Macbeth". It symbolises the guilt, unable to be washed away, just like a permanent stain. Blood is often connected to the feeling of guilt on the one hand and violence on the other hand. Betrayal Macbeth betrays Duncan by killing him in his sleep. He then arranges the murder of his friend Banquo. Macbeth's betrayal of his king and comrades ultimately lead to his downfall. Masculinity During the play, the characters always dwell on issues of gender. whenever they converse about manhood, violence soon follows. True masculinity is expressed through brutality and power. But, Lady Macbeth's behaviour clearly shows that women can be as ambitious and cruel as men.
