FACTS ABOUT PLASTIC POLLUTION Items you can find in almost any beach: - plastic bags and bottles. - plastic drums - expanded polystyrene packing polyurethane foam pieces -pieces of polypropylene fishing net discarded lenghts of rope traffic cones - disposable lighters - tyres - toothbrushes Plastic pollution in the ocean •Around 100 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year and 10 milion tonnes ends in the sea ->About 80% of it comes from land Plastic items can take up to 1000 years to decompose THE "TRASH VORTEX"/ "EASTERN GARBAGE PATCH" The North Pacific sub-tropical gyre covers a large area of the Pacific. The water circulates clockwise in a low spiral. Winds are light and the currents tend to push any floating material into the low energy centre of the gyre. There are just a few islands on which some of the floating material stays. Most of it stays in the gyre (six kilos of plastic for every kilo of plankton). CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES •The durability of plastic makes a big problem for the oceans •The plastic slowly breaks up into smaller pieces because of the sunlight, wave action and mechanical abrasion •The tiny plastic particles are easily eaten by fish and other marine species •Cargo ships are carrying packing cases, which are filled with small plastic pellets. The small plastic pellets are often spread across the ocean -> are frequently found during beach...

clean-ups •Some of the items are consumed by seabirds and other animals, which mistakes them for prey •Many seabirds and chicks have been found dead, their stomaches filled with bottle tops, lighters and ballons •Over a million seabirds and one hundred thousand marine mammals and sea turtles are killed each year by either eating plastic and other items or by getting tangled in discarded netting, fishing lines etc. Plastic can also act as a sort of "chemical sponge". When an animal eats these pieces of plastic debris, it is taking in highly toxic pollutants •Floating plastic can also provide easy transport for plants and animals to move into oceans beyond their normal habitat, which causes a big problem by disturbing the natural balance of the ecosystem POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS FOR THE PROBLEM Use less plastic •Manage your garbage properly •Participate in a beach cleanup •Support organizations adressing plastic pollution
