Active and Passive Active Hailey Miller works as a volunteer at Moss Beach. Passive In 1969, Moss Beach was made a state reserve. Thousands of visitors are welcomed at the reserve each year. The marine reserve is owned by the State of California. Passive A girl was hurt at the marine reserve on Sunday. She got too close to the seals on the beach and was bitten. She was taken to the hospital. Her parents took her home to their holiday apartment this morning. Form Simple present Guided tours are offered... Simple past Guided tours were offered ... Present perfect Guided tours have been offered... Past perfect Guided tours had been offered ... Will-future Guided tours will be offered ... Going to future Guided tours are going to be offered ... Modal auxiliaries Guided tours can/could be offered... The passive is formed with a form of "be" and the past participle of the verb. In informal English, a form of "get" is sometimes used instead of "be", especially for sudden and unexpected events like accidents. With different kinds of verbs Active: The fire destroyed their house. Passive: Their house was destroyed. Active: They thanked us for our work. Passive: We were thanked for our work. Active: Hailey joined them. Passive: They were joined by Hailey. Active: The police think that one of the office workers helped the thieves. Passive: The thieves were helped by one of the office workers, according to the police. Active: Her parents promised her a mobile. Passive: She was promised a mobile. Passive: He was given just one week to learn his lines. Active: Someone has broken into the shop. Passive: The shop has been broken into. Note that with phrasal verbs (verbs with a preposition), the verb and preposition stay together in the passive form. In English, the indirect object of an active sentence can be the subject of a passive sentence. This is called the personal passive. In German, this kind of passive sentence is not possible. Example: Active - Two Swedes joined us. Passive - We were joined by two Swedes.
