how to write a picture analysis
Overview . STEP 1 Introduction • Note what the picture shows in one sentence. Add any information you know (creator's name, picture type; when/where/why it was created), plus emotions the picture evokes and/or, if asked, your first reaction. STEP 2 Description • Describe the picture systematically. Imagine you are describing the picture to a blind person; what important elements and background are needed to explain the picture and its message? • Use the present progressive to describe what people are doing in a picture, and the simple present to describe objects and the setting. Describe speech bubbles and captions, people's body language and facial expressions and their relationship with each other. STEP 3 Analysis • Describe the message conveyed by the picture. Is it aimed at a particular target group? • Was the picture intended to have a certain effect on the viewer? If so, how is this achieved? Say how language, light, colours, focus and perspective are used to support the message. • Detect fake elements: Has the picture been manipulated? Does the caption/meme text create a different context? STEP 4 Evaluation State whether the picture is effective and which elements are responsible for its success/failure. • If it is a historical picture, compare the original effect it may have had with the one it has now. .
