Chapter 1 and 2 Summary
In the opening chapters of "Among the Hidden", we are introduced to Luke Garner, a twelve-year-old boy living in a world where families are restricted to having only two children. As the third child in his family, Luke must remain hidden to avoid detection by the Population Police.
Highlight: Luke is forced to hide indoors when the government decides to build new houses in the nearby woods, eliminating his outdoor refuge.
The Garner family faces significant challenges as they adapt to the new circumstances:
- Luke is no longer allowed to go outside or be seen by anyone.
- The family must hide all evidence of Luke's existence when visitors arrive.
- Luke's brothers, Mark and Matthew, must take on his chores, causing some resentment.
Quote: "The government didn't ask if we wanted houses there."
Luke struggles with his confinement and the realization that he may never have the freedom his brothers enjoy. His mother tries to comfort him, explaining the situation and the reasons behind the Population Law.
Vocabulary: Population Police - The government agency responsible for enforcing the two-child policy.
As the story progresses, Luke's world becomes even more restricted:
- He is forced to eat meals on the bottom steps, out of sight from windows.
- The family receives news that they must get rid of their pigs due to complaints from new neighbors.
- Property taxes increase dramatically, putting financial strain on the family.
Example: Luke's mother decides to work in a factory to help pay the increased taxes, leaving Luke unsure about who will stay with him during the day.
These early chapters set the stage for Luke's journey, highlighting the oppressive nature of the government and the sacrifices families must make to protect their hidden children.
