CLIMATE CHANGE WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE? Climate change is the global phenomenon of climate transformation characterized by the changes in the usual climate of the planet (e.g. temperature or wind), that are especially caused by human activities. As a result, the sustainability of the planet's ecosystems is under threat, as well as the future of humankind and the estability of the global economy. CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE •As a result of the industrial revolution = earth's surface is warming up. > a major reason for rising temperatures is concentration of green - house gases in the earth's sitmosphere. earth's atmosphere consists of gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, .nitrous oxide, and water vapor. natural greenhouse effect is helpful for our planet, without it our temperatures would be around minus 18 degrees Celsius •Greenhouse effect: normally the sun's radiation would be reflected back to Space but some gases trap the sun's heat and send it back to the earth's. surface ? this way, our earh stays warm. human activities, e-g burning fossil fuels like oil and coal to power our homes, factories, airplanes and cars, have increased amount of greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere. >result of the greenhouse gas emissions: Greenhouse effect intensifies >problem: these gases trap too much heat > this excessive greenhouse effect results in globa, warming which is an increase...

in the earth's average temperature. another problem demand for food increases need for more land which. accelerates deforestation >reduction of oxygen-producing forests is one links in the chain that leads to climate change and endangers the habitat of thousands of spe- cies. >The trees store a lot of CO₂ that escapes into the atmosphere through deforestation. >intensifies the greenhouse effect BRUNNEN CONSEQUENCES OF CLIMATE CHANGE warming melts glaciers and ice at the North and South Poles >result: sea levels are rising and coastal areas are flooded >many islands are getting smaller and smaller or sink completely into the sea. >polar bears can not hunt, without a stable.ground •natural disasters forest fires, flooding, droughts and hurricanes. due to severe drought and lack of rain, forest fires are more common in many areas > bad because trees store the climate-damaging co₂ > CO₂ is released by the forest fires and enters the atmosphere. > greenhouse effect is intensified and earth gets, warmer. Animals and plants: unable to adapt, so quickly to rapid climate change, many are threatened with extinction • Human; we too must adapt to environmental change, many people are already forced to leave their homes involuntarily because agriculture, and food production are affected affected. We have to radically reduce our greenhouse gas emission and start. using renewable energy as an example solar and wind power zone. of the most effective tools, we have in the fight against climate change.
