EARLY AUTUMN Langston Hughes The short story 'Early Autumn', written by Langston Hughes, who lived from 1902 to 1967, is about two people who had been a couple a long time ago and now meet each other again. The main characters, Mary and Bill, had been in love years ago. Something unimportant split them up. Mary had married anotfur man and Bill went away. One day, they meet each other again, coincidentally. They have a little smalltalk about where they live now, and their jobs. They even talk about having sometime but then families 1 like him. ļ 1 their dinner Mary's bus comes and she has to go. After she got in the bus, Mary realises that they forgot to exchange numbers or addresses. She also tell that her youngest son is named P The short story is told by a third-person omniscient narrator. You can see that when Bill does not recognize Mary (1.8) or when Mary is afraid to say something when she enters the bus (11.40-41). The narrator knows everything: about Bills and Mary's feelings and thoughts.
