Science & Technology Genetic Engineering Humans have been genetically modifying everything for the last thousands of years. The reason for this is simple: when you have a good plant harvest good food, you want to multiply this plant. In this case worse plants with less fruits or bad fruits are selected. You just bred the products which have benefits for you. Just remember the Darwinism: survival of the fittest (more multiplying for those with the best gens) Big question now: what is the difference between Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) and mentioned Darwinism? There are two differences. The first one: you need a lot of time. If you want to choose the best survivor and multiply it, you need many generations. The second distinction is luck. You need lucky hits to get the best product, animal or whatever you want. Now we know what the differences are, let's take a look to GMO to the benefits and disadvantages. I do not want to go too abstract so take in mind that we are taking about plants. Disadvantage: Genetic Modified Crops (GMC) would/ could be mixed with traditional crops - having new crops with different characteristics and less "normal" crops. In own Words Short: parents can design their own dream baby. Benefit: Reduce genetic and inherited diseases. You got a heart problem? That is bad, but your kid (Baby) doesn't need to have it too... just change the DNA a little bit. Benefit: Better chance to succeed in life. If you are a Designer Baby, you may have no diseases. Benefit: Life spans will increase. No diseases, no problems... good life in high age too. Diseases = Krankheiten Disadvantage: It's expensive in the beginning, so just rich people can afford this. That's unfair for poor families/parents. Big ethical question: Who is telling us what bad and good trades are? Where do we draw the line which we should not cross? Should everybody have perfect eyes and big muscles? Conclusion: Disadvantage: Terminated embryos have no choice and got a loss of individuality. Ads have always been a very important source of money for multimedia mediums (like for example television and radio) and the internet has been taking the same path since its very first days. As of today, a lot of things that we take for granted are financially sustained by ads (like for example the infinite number of apps on online stores such as the "Google Play Store" and the “Apple App Store"). Because of how much bigger the internet is compared to other multimedia mediums, the number of ads has increased exponentially, leading to a need of categorization. The only reliable way to categorize effectively those ads is the usage of private data from the internet users, so that the right ad can pop-up at the right moment. These private data have to be interpreted by an algorithm (made by a specialized company like for example Google). Benefit: Advertised about an item you were searching Benefit: Advertised about new ideas Benefit: Advertised about hints and tips for your daily activities Benefit: Not advertised about unwanted content Disadvantage: Private data are getting shared with the advertising company Disadvantage: Private data might get hacked and get sold on the dark web Disadvantage: Private Data could be misused Disadvantage: Not everybody knows how his private data are getting sold/shared 4 Science & Technology Tech as leading industry of mankind Our technological progress in the latest decades is probably the most influencing and important characteristic of our modern. From the evolution of telephones and multimedia consumption, to simply being able to travel at much higher speeds that we used to (with much faster and reliable trains and planes for example), the tech industry has been playing an important role for mankind and its evolution. Covid-19 has been a great test for us as a species, since our physical connection with other beings as we knew it was suddenly cut off and we had to adapt and inter-connect ourselves with others in new ways. Tech has proven itself to be incredible tool to let us connect with other persons while being physically confined. In fact, we have never been this much connected with each other as whole species. People from very distant countries can communicate and influence each other in seconds, without having to wait months for a letter written on paper. This "connection" as a whole is probably the key factor of this topic: as a race of biological beings, we are evolving. We have taken a new path without even noticing it, and now we are trying to adjust ourselves, so that this path doesn't prove itself to be fatal for mankind (as all the other topics largely demonstrated). As those adjustments are getting made, there is only one limit left: human knowledge. How much knowledge can we achieve without becoming crazy? (as Lovecraft described in his stories) How much knowledge can we achieve about the universe? (as Neil deGrasse asks himself everyday) How far can we spread? Tech might show us answers in the future. As of right now, humans are trying to perfectionate tech in all its sectors and it is not going to improve for a very long time (since a lot of issues are not just moral and ethical, but also scientific.
