'The Giver' summary

a game with Asher and an apple. Jonas noticed that the apple had changed in the air. chapter 4 Jonas wants to spend his last volunteer hours with his friends. So he volunteers at the House of the Old. Asher, Fiona and Jonas are helping in the bathing room. This morning they celebrate in the House of the Old the release of Roberto. Jonas talks with Larissa about Roberto's life and about the releasing. chapter 5 The family talk about their dreams in the morning. Jonas dreams about Fiona. He has his first Stirrings and must take a pill. chapter 6 The first Ceremonies starts. Lily and Jonas talk about the new things you get every year and Lily is very excited especially for the Ceremony of the Nine next year. Gabriel is labeled as Uncertain. So he has no Ceremony of the One this year. He will be at night at Jonas family unit. chapter 7 Jonas Ceremony starts. Jonas remembers the little Asher. Asher gets the Assignment of Assistant Director of Recreation. Fiona was right before him and gets the Assignment of Caretaker of the Old. But the Chief Elder doesn't call Jonas. She skips him. chapter 8 Jonas is the last who receives his Assignment. Jonas is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory. He is selected because he has intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom and the capacity to see beyond. He sees the changing again when he looks up to the crowd. chapter 9 Jonas feels separate and different after the Ceremony. His parents are very proud of him. He reads his rules for his training/job in the evening. The rules confuse him because they are so different to his life before. chapter 10 Jonas rides to the first training with Fiona. The furniture in the room of the Receiver is more luxurious than at his family unit. Jonas is excited about all the books. He didn't know there exist so many. Jonas gets to know the Giver. The Giver wants to transmit the memory of a sled rode. chapter 11 The Giver transmits Jonas the memory of a snow day. Jonas could feel the cold and the snowflakes, see the snow and the sled and enjoys the memory very well. Then he enjoys the memory of sunshine and in the end of the first training he gets the memory of sunburn. chapter 12 Jonas family have in the morning another dream telling time. He dreamed about the memory of snow but he can't share this dream with his family. In school everybody talks about their experiences of the first day of training but Jonas also can't talk about his experience. After school Jonas and Fiona ride to training by bike. When they say goodbye Jonas sees the changing again. This time it was with Fiona's hair. He talks with the Giver about it. Jonas begins to see the colour red and then the Giver gives him the memory of a rainbow. chapter 13 Jonas gets to know more about the memories and the colours. He wants to share the colours with others especially Gabriel in his learning age. One day the Giver transmits a memory of elephants. Another day they talk about the life as the Receiver of Memory. chapter 14 The Giver gives Jonas more painful memories. One was another sled ride but this time his leg broke. One night Gabriel sleeps in Jonas room. When Gabriel wakes up in the middle of the night Jonas placed his hands on Gabriel's back. Jonas realises that he gives Gabriel a memory of a boat on a lake with this gesture. chapter 15 a painful memory of a war chapter 16 The Giver shares his favourite memory with Jonas. It's a memory about a family with grandparents celebrating Christmas. Jonas likes the memory with the feeling of love. So he decided not to take his pill anymore. chapter 17 On the unscheduled holiday Jonas wants to spend his time with Asher. Asher, Fiona and a few others are playing a war scene. Jonas remembers the painful and sad memory the Giver gives him once. Lily tries to ride the bike from her dad because it's almost December again and she will have the Ceremony of Nine. In the evening the family talk about the releasing of one twin for whom his dad must decide after birth. chapter 18 The Giver and Jonas talk about the releasing of Rosemary the Receiver in training ten years ago. The community had to take the memories Rosemary had when she was released. So Jonas can't ask for release. chapter 19 Jonas and the Giver watch to the release of the twin in the morning. Jonas can't handle the fact that his dad killed a newborn. chapter 20 Jonas spends the night in the Annex. The Giver had made a plan. The memories need to be shared. Jonas should leave the community the day of the Ceremony and find the Elsewhere. Jonas disappearing should look like he drowns in the river. The Giver wants to stay there so he can help the community holding up with these memories and the pain. chapter 21 In the evening when Jonas comes back home his family told him that Gabriel cries all the night long and so he will be released the next morning. So Jonas decided to leave the community with Gabe that night. chapter 22 They see unknown landscape. The first days they must hide for the planes which search them. When a plane flies over them, Jonas gives to them a cold memory because the planes could identify body warmth. It's hard for them because they are very hungry, it was raining and Jonas twisted his ankle and his muscles were also very tired. chapter 23 The landscape change into hills and it is very cold and snowy. Jonas gives to them a memory of sunshine. At the top of the hill they find a sled and ride downhill. Downward Jonas can see lights. They found the Elsewhere.
