Characterization - Walter Lee Younger Walter Lee Younger is the protagonist in the play, A Raisin in the Sun" willen by Lorraine Hansberry. The play is about an African-American family which experiences racism in .. Chicage in the 1950's. Waller lee is a round character. Southside Walter is an African-American man, who lives in a small apartment with his mother Lena Younger, his sister Beneatha, his vite Ruth and their son Trans. He is in his mid- Hirties and dreams of having an oun liquor store which offers him enough money for life. (cf. p.33) To reach his dream of an liquor store he is really persistant and reminds the other family member often that he vants to invest the money from Lena in a liquour store with his friends. (d.p.37/p. 105) On the one shoe it's a positive characteristic, but on the other shoe you can describe him as an selfish peson, because he just wants to reach his dreams without thinking of other pesons Lishes or plans, like Reneall as dream of a medical education or Lenas dream of „ buying (..) [ a 3 house and fixing it up and making (..) [her] a littler garden in the back" (p.45)/(ct.p.44). When he heard about Ruth pregnancy he doesn't react...

This characteristic let him sound really rude, when he criticise Murchisons outward apperance (cf. p.83). Another draracteristic which can be positive and negative the same time, is, that he is always honest and he confronts the oker characters with his feelings. (cf. p. 26/p.83) when he is ashing Murchison, Why are all you college boys wear them faggety-lodung while shoes?" (p.83) it can also be his intention to provdie Murchison with his unlind behavior, just because he doesn't like him. On page 70 he confronts his family with his feelings foo, by shouting & Mill sonarebody please listen to me today!" (6.70) and I guess in this sibaltion it is a positiv characteristic that he tells his feelings to the other characters, so that they are alde to change their beliations. Esspecially in the first part of the play Walter is really fast annoyed of someone or something and that's why he has often argues lith ollers. (cf. p. 26) He is annoyed because he can't get into the bathroom in time (cf. p.26) or because someone is critizising his business plans (cf. p. 33) During the conversations he is passive agressive and rude (cf.p.06). 21.11.21 In their family it seems like he sees himself as the family, head" and someone who can decide about their life and money. When they argue about how to invest the money, which is officially from Lena, he talks about it as it is his money or money from the whole family. Have we figured out yet just exactly hou much medical school is going to cost? (...) You know the checke is coming tommorous!" (p.36), until Beneatha rerrinds him that,, That money belongs to Mama (...)." (1.2) Furthermore the describes himself as, (...) Mrs. Younger's son. I look after most of her business matters.” (p. 114) although Lena would be able to talk to Mr. Lindner as well. him him enough. money As Taris father he is generous with money, for example when with doesn't give (cf. p. 30/31) He is also proud of him, That's my boy." (p. 31) and crands to be an idol for him, that's why he tells Tanis about his business plans, on which he is really proud (cf. p. 108). He daw him a picture of him as a wealtly business man in the folure (cf. p. 108). Since he sais so le must be really self-confident about reaching his dreams. (cf. p. 108) In the first part of the play Walter Lee is presented as a courteous and generous father and a self-confident and honest person but also as a selfish, rude and persistant family member, who provolies argues. for school he gave He has a big development in the play. In the second part of the play he has some completely different characteristics. He is selfless instead of being sellish. He emphasizes that they, (..) have all thought about [Mr. Lindners] (..) offer — " (p. 148) and he shows that he is proud of his family and esspecially his father, who, eaned it for US brick by brick." (The house) (p. 148). The acts before the was really feet annoyed of someone during an argue and he communicated that by being rude and passive agressive, but when Mr. Lindace comes to offer them the announcement for not moving to Clybourne pare he is angry (cf. p. 120) but he is nevertheless friendly and is just saying Mr. Lindner « Get out!“ (p. 119). Another characteristhie that changed during the play is that he is thankful about getting parts of the money from (ona (cf. p.107) instead of seeing it as a self-evidence to decide what happens to Lena's money. To sum everything up Valter Lee Younger developed from a tense, selfish and sometimes too self-confident character to a proud, selfless and polite character who interacts with the other
