Characetrization The novel "Thirteen Reasons Why" written by Jay Asher, published in 2013 by Klett deals with teenage anxiety, depression and suicide. The main character is Hannah Baker who is described in the short excerpt from cassette 1A page 26-33. The seventeen year oldfreshman (cf. P. 19, 129) is new in town but already has to deal with rumors based on her first kiss. Hannah Baker is presented as a protagonist, who tells the story about her semmed to be wonderful first kiss. Throughout the excerpt indirect characterization predominates. The reader mostly gets to know her character traits through Hannahs special sentences but also because of the dual perspective. Throgh Clay many information are conveyed (cf. P. 28, 1.5). The reader learns that Hannah is a person splitted in two different character sides. On the one hand she is determined person. She speaks in a direct way and is able to manipulate others in the way she speaks: "So Justin what's the math problem" ( p.26, 1.32).With that rhetorical question her strong-minded character comes across. She knows what she is getting Justi into by asking this question because Hannah knows that he does not have a math problem. Besides her strong-minded charcter she is humorous althugh she does not have a reason for being it. Hannah has a difficult relation...

Apart fro her famil problms Hannah is a romantic dreamer: ,,I wanted to be inside that rocket and all the way up, just like in my dreams" (p.30,1.15f) emphasizes her dreamy side. She needs everything to happen just like she planned in her dreams. Conspicuously are her short sentences a few moments before her first kiss: ,,The push.y hair flying behind me. You raising your arms to catch me. Me raising mine so you could.“ (p.31,1,16f.) Her short sentences underline her exitement, her exitement having her first kiss. For all Hannah's second character side is the disappointed and depressed one. She is tired and sick of everything (cf.p.33,ll.16f) and does not know how to deal with such a rumor based truly on nothing. In a nutshell one can say that Hannah is a strong-minded, happy and exited person but also disappointed and sick of everything. Her character traits are depict by her short sentences and her specific way of communicating. Hannah Baker is a protagonist in the triest sence of term, wanting other to understand her.
