She lives in the Seam (Part of district 12). The forest, where she hunts, is enclosed by a fence, she crawls underneath it to hunt, her father taught her before death in a coal mine explosion when she was eleven. Trespassing in the woods and hunting is illegal, but no one cares because she sells meat to the Peacekeepers. In the woods she meets her friend Gale, they go fishing and afterwards trade for bread and salt at the black market. Then they sell strawberries at the mayor's house and talk to his daughter and Gale gets angry about the injustice of the reaping process. At age twelve your name is entered once, at thirteen twice, and so on. You can also choose to enter several times for a tesserae (year supply of grain, oil for one person). Names are up until the age of eighteen. Katniss (16) is entered 20 times, Gale(18) 42 times and Prim(12) once. At two everyone goes to the town square because that's where the reaping takes place. (page 25 history of Panem!!!) In the Hunger Games one male and female from each district must fight to death in an outdoor arena, the tribute surviving wins and their district receives extra food. Then Effie Trinket draws the first tributes name: Primrose Everdeen Why does Buttercup (cat) hate Katniss? -> she tried to drown him because she didn't want to have another one to provide food to, but Prim begged her to stop Why is district 12 surrounded by fences? -> to keep out predators like wild dogs, lone cougars and bears out and citizens in How is Katniss' mother different from other residents of the Seam? -> she has light hair, blue eyes caused by her parents being part of the small merchant class and ran the apothecary shop in the nicer part of District 12 Why don't Gale and Katniss run away and live in the woods? -> because they are providing their families with food and can't just leave them alone What is the Hob? -> the black market in an abandoned coal warehouse Describe the Reaping system. How is it unfair? -> at the age of twelve you are entered once, at age thirteen twice, and so on until your eighteenth year. Therefore, poor people often have to enter their name more often than richer citizens. What are the Hunger Games? -> each year every district provides one girl and boy, called Tributes, to participate in the Games. The 24 Tributes then must fight to the death in a vast outdoor arena, while the rest of the country watches on television Would you like to live in District 12? -> No, because of the oppressive classification and starvation among citizens How is Panem oppressive? -> It forces people to participate in the hunger games and doesn't really care about the wellbeing of citizens as well as classifying them completely without any real chance to change anything about the poorly situation one lives in Do you think there are places like Panem on earth today? -> definitely, if you take a glance at some of the political systems there are, for instance in North Korea, you can definitely see that there are governments oppressing their citizens like in Panem and classification is also a huge factor in a lot of countries. Even in the US where you can get better education of you are rich, which shows how unfair some countries are in the aspect of not giving people of different social classes the same chances. But also, TV is criticised in The Hunger Games through them being like a reality TV show, which can be also seen as criticism on our own reality TV formats like GNTM/ANTM or jungle camp, where people obviously watch others suffer for enjoyment, but we also have to keep in mind that nobody is forced to go there like in Panem. - 2- chapter 2: REAPING Katniss volunteers as tribute out of panic, this never happened in District 12. She fights showing any emotion as she wants to seem strong towards other tributes. Yet the crowd doesn't applause, however, shows a gesture of respect to her. The boy's name is drawn and it's Peeta Mellark, she just knows him because he is the son of a baker and gave her two burned loaves of bread after his mum hit him in the time Katniss had to search for food because her family was near starvation caused by her mother not caring about her or her sister after her husband's death. She still feels like she owes Peeta something and doesn't want to have to kill him in the Games. How does Katniss safe Prim from the Reaping? -> after someone gets drawn Tribute, one is eligible to volunteer as Tribute himself which is more common in other districts then districts 12 How did Kat's mother react to her husband's death? -> she became depressed and would often times just sit around staring at some spot and didn't really care for her children anymore Describe Kat's only previous encounter with Peeta Mellark. -> After her father died in the mine her mother became depressed, so she had to find food for her family as she was too young to enter for the Games and the tessera. After she hasn't found anything, Peeta gave her two loafs of bread when he saw her scavenging through the garbage bins behind his family's bakery Is Katniss´ anger towards her mother justified? -> Of course, her mother is beaten down and really sad about her husband's death and can't actually help herself if getting emotionally strained as she clearly suffered from mental health issues. But she still is their mother and is obliged to care for them and she obviously had the opportunity to get a job. Therefore, she left her daughters somewhat on their own which she definitely shouldn't do as they also suffered from their father's death, so her anger definitely is justified How might Katniss´ previous encounter with Peeta affect her during the games? -> I believe she wouldn't want to kill him, to avoid any confrontations with him she might try to even distance herself from him and not to ally with Peeta - 3- chapter 3: GOODBYE Katniss is escorted into the Justice Building and left alone in a luxurious room. Her mother and Prim are brought in to say goodbye, Katniss makes her mother promise to care for Prim and tells them that she loves them. Peeta Mellark's father comes in as well and gives her cookies and promises to keep an eye on Prim. Then Madge enters and gives Katniss a golden pin with a Mockingjay on it, a bird resulted of a failed government breeding experiment (The jabberjay was first created to spy on rebels and enemies as they could memorize and repeat human convo, then male jabberjays bred with female mockingbirds and gave birth to the mockingjay which could repeat human melodies and birdsongs), this bird reminds Katniss of her father. Afterwards Gale steps in and advises her to find a bow once in the arena and promises to keep an eye on her family. Then Katniss gets into a train and takes her first shower, then she and Peeta head to dinner with Effie Trinket where they watch recaps of the reaping and Haymitch comes in drunk. How does Katniss feel about her chances to win? -> She thinks she will die quiet early because of all the bigger stronger kids who trained for the games all their life, but won't just die without a fight, which she promises. Who visits Katniss and what gifts do they bring her? -> Mother, Prim, Gale, Peeta Mellark's father (cookies) and Madge (golden pin) What is a mockingjay? -> jabberjays bred with mockingbirds and birth mockingjays, they can repeat human melodies What role will Haymitch play in the Games? -> he is Katniss and Peeta's mentor, he has to advise them during training and will manage their sponsorships during the games What do you think Gale wanted Katniss to say? Are they (or he) more than just friends? -> I think it's a rather complicated relationship between these two. Gale and Katniss relationship built out of their need to help and provide their families with food, then they got closer but mostly as allies and not friends. Yet I do believe he likes her as he gave her a Nickname (Catnip) and even figures that they could eventually flee together (p. 18) which is also reasoned by his desire to get out of district 12. Maybe he wanted to tell her that he loved her, but I also believe that even if he did want to, he wouldn't have done it as he knew how guilty Katniss already felt about her family maybe losing her as a loved one and he couldn't put any more guilt onto her. - 4- chapter 4: ON THE TRAIN After Haymitch fell into his own vomit after being drunk, Peeta volunteers to clean him. Katniss goes to her room and wonders why Peeta helped Haymitch, then she realizes that he probably just wanted to be nice and concludes that she should really stay away from him to avoid building up sympathy towards him. Therefore, she throws his fathers cookies out of her compartment window, they land in some dandelions which makes her think back about the time she started learning about plants and how one day she noticed Katniss in the forests (plant) which she dug up and they ate till they were full. That was the day her mother started to get better as well. The next morning, she goes to breakfast and Peeta gets angry at Haymitch for not advising them right, he slaps his drink out of his hand, Haymitch slaps him, and Katniss stabs a knife in the table and then throws it into the wall. Haymitch then decides to help them, tells them to not resists the stylists which will come later. Then the train arrives at the capitol and Peeta as well as Katniss are amazed at the grandeur and bizarre people they see. Katniss steps back as she realises that Gale is waving at them saying that they may be rich and could be helpful and then she knew that he may also be planning on finding a way to survive through sympathy. Why does Katniss decide to stay away from Peeta as much as possible? -> She has the feeling that she still owes him something due to the bread loaves a long time ago and now that she gets to know him a bit more and concludes that he´s rather nice she doesn't want to sympathise How do Peeta and Katniss gain Haymitch's support? -> They challenge him and show him that they are indeed fighters Why do you think Haymitch drinks so much? Why has he let himself go? -> Probably because of the horror he experiences through fighting in the games and killing people there as well as every tribute he trained afterwards died in the arena which he probably thinks could be his fault, this would also explain his change when realising Peeta and Katniss came to fight. - 5-
