Chapter 1: Reaping Day
The chapter begins with Katniss Everdeen waking up, leaving her sister Prim and mother still asleep, to go hunting in the woods of District 12, the Seam. Despite the illegal nature of her hunting activities, she sells the meat to the Peacekeepers. Katniss reflects on her father's death in a coal mine explosion and how he taught her to hunt before his passing.
She meets her friend Gale in the woods, and they trade for bread and salt at the black market. Then, they sell strawberries at the mayor's house and discuss the injustice of the reaping process, where their names are entered multiple times for tesserae. Katniss is entered 20 times, Gale 42 times, and Prim once.
At the town square, the reaping takes place. Prim's name is drawn as the female tribute by Effie Trinket.
