The American Dream Definition. According to this concept, every person can achieve a higher standart of living regardless of their current work. The Term The American Dream. is a term by the american historican James Truslow. Adams. The catch phrase was born in the Great Depression, In Adam's study "The Epic of America (1931).. the dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the european upper classes to interpret ade- quately, and too many of us our selves have grown weary and mistrustful of it... -James Truslow Adams The european upper classes are used to the then common feudalism. Bill of Rights In order to protect the individual liberties, the majority of the states have approved the ten amendments, that are known as the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights describes the basic rights of the people and forbids the government from denying these liberties. The amendments include for instance, the freedom of speech, religion, the press and the right to assemble. Self- Actualization BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE Ellis Island When people came from all over the. world to the U.S.A.., they must go through a hard procedure on Ellis Island. The ships that take the immigrants to America were comfor- table only for the privileged upper class,. that had their cabins on the upper. decks. For them, there was a huge entertainment programm with restaurants, swim- ming pools etc. The lower classes had to stay under deck, where the air was quite warm and thick. All passengers looked forward to their new lifes in America. But first, there waited a days-long process on Ellis Island for them, before they could enter the country. Although at this time, neither papers nor visas were needed, the Americans had an eye on their immigrants. There was a medical examination and later an interview.
