Characterisation - caste - age - profession - outer appearance - hobbies - grade of conformity - achievements for the community
Name: Lenina Crowne Caste: Beta-Plus Age: in her twenties (p.30) 19 Profession: she is a hatchery worker (nurse, more specifically) in the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre. We are first introduced to her as the DHC gives a tour of the centre and we see her as she is inoculating embryos against typhoid and sleeping sickness. (P. 12) Outer appearance: "uncommonly pretty" (p. 12); purple eyes, "coral teeth" (p. 12) whatever that may mean, she is described as having lupus, which is an autoimmune disease that sometimes causes people to have rashes in their faces, which seems to be the case with Lenina. In this world, she fulfills the beauty ideals, since she is described numerous times as being "pneumatic", which, in the context of this world, means that she is desirable and pretty. Hobbies/activities: Lenina likes to travel, since she describes that she has already been on numerous travels with her lovers. On her date with Henry Foster, they play Obstacle Golf, which seems to be a regular activity for them. (p. 52) Grade of conformity: In the beginning, Lenina is shown to be very conform to the system, often quoting the hypnopaedic lessons that she learned as an infant, meaning that she also has the usual fancy for soma and prejudices against members of the lower castes. Later, she recalls...

that as a little girl, she had become aware of the whispers in her sleep that are the hypnopaedic lessons, though she seemed to have forgotten this particular experience (p. 61) Also, Lenina is very open in public around themes like promiscuity, dating life and sex. She is conform in almost every aspect except the fact that she finds Bernard attractive even though he is a social outcast. Also, she is unusual in her usually only taking one partner at a time and having relatively long-lived relationships, such as the one with Henry Foster. She is aware of this nonconformity and either tries to justify it or to rectify it, at least for her own clean conscience, when she starts seeing Bernard while still somewhat being with Henry. This nonconformity, while only being a slight oddity at the beginning, turns into a more serious problem when Lenina begins to feel desire toward John, the Savage. This becomes a problem because John has a fundamentally different understanding of relationships and rejects her sexual advances, therefore making Lenina have an unfulfilled desire. This causes a certain absence of mind and even leads to her presumably making a mistake at work, which is that she forgets whether she gave an embryo a vaccination or not. This unfulfilled desire is a micro-threat to the neat, organised world that the World State has created. Achievements for the community: as a nurse in the hatchery, she is responsible for giving vaccinations to embryos. In her daily life, she does not do anything special, she is more of a little wheel in the grand scheme of things, fulfilling her job mostly reliably and seeming to do the same job every day. Her greater achievement, if you can call it that, is that she is the one, along with Bernard, who takes John the Savage and his mother Linda back to the World State, which is the inciting incident for the main plot of the story, which involves John.
