the first chapter, Miles Halter is introduced as the main character. Miles is leaving his home and his parents in Florida to attend a boarding school in Alabama. His mother throws him a going away party. Miles does not expect anybody to show up to his party anyways but two people from his school do. His father and his uncles have attended the same boarding school, Culver Creek. Miles likes reading and remembering people's last words. Chapter 2: Miles arrives at the boarding school in Alabama, where he meets his roommate Chip. Both of them share a small room. Chip gives Miles the nickname 'pudge' and tells him to call Chip 'the colonel'. He takes Miles to buy some cigarettes he gets from a girl named Alaska. She lives in the room 48 and after meeting her, Miles immediately falls in love with her. The Colonel explains to Miles who the Eagle is. The Eagle (Mr.Starness) is the one who watches over all students Chapter 3: Chip introduces Miles to some people and one of them is a boy called Takumi. Miles is woken up in the middle of the night by a group of (Weekday Warrior) boys. The boys drag Miles to the lake, duct tape him and throw him into the lake. The boys tell Miles that it's Chips fault. The Colonel gets angry when he finds out what happened Chapter 4: School starts for Miles and the others and he gets to meet his new teachers. He's impressed by his religion teacher Dr. Hyde. Miles remembers the boys who threw him into the lake and points them out for Chip. Chapter 5: Miles gets to know Sara, Colonels girlfriend who comes to pick him up for a date but then leaves after getting angry that he didn't iron his shirt. Shortly after she calls him and tells him that the weekday warriors believe that he ratted out two people who then got kicked out for smoking and drinking Chapter 6: Miles gets distracted by looking outside the window in Dr. Hyde's class, and gets kicked out for not paying attention. Alaska gets kicked out as well for pointing out how ridiculous the reasoning was. Miles is very upset because he does not want to make a bad impression upon Dr. Hyde. After this event, Miles, Takumi, the Colonel and Alaska head down to the forest to smoke cigarettes. Chapter 7: The first basketball game of the season is taking place and Miles and chip attend it. Miles expresses how much he hates sports and chip tells him how he managed to get kicked out of every basketball game by behaving bad and distracting the team. Two of the weekday warriors try to make truce with Miles and chip by saying that what they did to Miles was revenge for ratting out their friends. After chip tells them that he didn't rat them out they deny their offer. Chapter 8: Dr. Hype approaches Miles to let him know that he needs to pay attention to the class because he can tell that he enjoys the class, but has to stay focused. 3. Chapter 9: Miles spends time with Alaska and some other people. They study for their upcoming precalc test. Chapter 10: Miles spends some time alone with Alaska and decides to ask her about her name. Alaska explains that her parents could not agree on a name so they told her to choose it herself so she choose Alaska because it was a big place, and it was far from Alabama, like she always wanted to be. She later explains that she loves the meaning of the word Alaska which means "that which the sea breaks against". Chapter 11: Miles, Alaska, Takumi and the Colonel go out by the lake to smoke. Unfortunately they get caught by the Eagle. He lets them know that they need to show up at Jury tomorrow, where their punishment will be decided. Chapter 12: The Colonel, Alaska, Takumi and Miles show up at the Jury and Alaska and the Colonel end up taking the blame and stating that Miles and Takumi were only witnesses. Alaska and the Colonel end up getting 10 hours of community work. Chapter 13: Alaska wants to set Miles up with Lara and therefore takes him on a double date with her boyfriend Jake, Sara, the colonel and Lara and Miles as well as Takumi. Chapter 14: They all go and watch a basketball game. Miles gets hit in the face and later throws up all over Lara who was sitting next to him. Later the colonel gets dumped by his girlfriend Sara. Chapter 15: Miles decides to avoid Lara because he feels embarrassed. He tries to speak to Alaska, but she acts very cold and condescending towards him. Chapter 16: Dr. Hyde gives the student their essay topic for their exam, which is "What is the most important question human beings must answer? Alaska is pranked by the weekday warriors who flood her whole room and ruin her stuff. She informs Miles and the colonel about it. Chapter 17: Takumi tells Miles that Alaska was the one who ratted out two of the weekday warriors. Alaska had done something that could have sent her home, but the Eagle asked her for any information she had in order to stay at the boarding school, so she ratted them out. Miles did not except Alaska to ever be a snitch and he can not believe it. Chapter 18: Alaska decides to stay at the boarding school for Thanksgiving break and Miles stays with her. Alaska never goes back home. Chapter 19: Alaska and Miles spend time together. They get drunk and gaze at the stars. Miles likes spending time with Alaska and eventually falls even harder for her. Chapter 20: Miles and Alaska spend the next day trying to find ways to prank the weekend warriors while everyone is away. Alaska comes up with a plan to put blue industrial strength hair dye in their hair products while they're away. 5. Chapter 21: Miles is working on his religion paper. Alaska and he go for hunting for secrets in other students rooms. They find some interesting things. After Alaska and Miles watch a porno and Alaska complains that woman are portrayed as objects. Later she lays down next to Miles and he describes her as a hurricane whereas he's the drizzle (p. 109) Chapter 22: The colonel come back and invites Alaska and Miles to his house for thanksgiving. They get to know that the colonel lives in a trailer with his mother. Miles realises that the colonel isn't embarrassed of his mother. Chapter 23: The group has a thanksgiving dinner with colonels mother. The day after Miles and Alaska head back to school. Chapter 24: Miles and Alaska head to a liquor store to get some alcohol. Later that day Alaska tells Miles that she opened up to colonel about the incident with the weekday warriors and that he said that he couldn't trust her anymore. She feels devastated and she thinks that she's always screwing everything up. Chapter 25: Miles spends Christmas with his family. His parents are happy that he's back even though he has to study for his precalc test most of the time. Miles realises that he's actually happy that he's got a caring and loving family. Chapter 26: Alaska suggests to play a pre prank before the actual prank. Therefore Alaska spends some time with the colonel and Miles feels like he's being excluded. Chapter 27: Miles still feels excluded and the only thing he knows about the pre-prank is that it would be called "The Barn", and that when they are ready for it, he should pack for two days. Miles spends the extra time he has working on his religion exam, and trying to find out the answer for it. Chapter 28: The colonel, Takumi and Miles go to the Eagle and tell him that they are staying at the colonels trailer for the weekend. Alaska tells him that she spends time with her boyfriend Jake and Lara says that she's visiting an old friend in Atlanta. The pre-prank is to light fireworks so that the Eagle comes out to find out who is doing it, and while this happens, the Colonel breaks into the faculty computer network to send out letters to the weekend warrior's families to tell them they're failing classes. The plan goes well, and the Eagle does not catch any of the guys. The group goes back to the barn, where they sleep and drink wine. Chapter 29: The next day they all spend talking and drinking. They play a game where everyone has to share their best and worst day. Colonel wins for telling a story about his best day, when he buys his mother a house and Alaska wins the worst day, where she found her mother lying on the floor and she thought that she was just sleeping not realising that she was dead. Miles finally understand Alaska somehow and later that night he asks Lara to be his girlfriend. 6. Chapter 32: The Eagle wakes everyone up in the morning and tells them to come to the gym. All the students gather in the gym. The Eagle stands in the front and asks if everyone is there but Miles says that they should wait for Alaska. Then the Eagle tells them that Alaska got into an accident and passed away. Miles runs out of the gym and starts throwing up. He thinks it's a prank Alaska is playing on them again so he goes to the Eagle and shares his thought with him but the Eagle says that she did die and it's not a prank. The colonel and Miles feel guilty. Chapter 33: Miles can't sleep and the colonel gets angry with Alaska for being impulsive. Miles feels guilty because he thinks they they should have stopped her but the colonel says that they shouldn't have had to. Miles dreams that Alaska came into his room and he wanted her to stay but she declined and became a corpse. Chapter 34: The colonel can't sleep and he admits that he was tired of Alaska's constant mood changes. He walks around at 5 am to calm down. Chapter 35: Miles, takumi, the colonel and Lara go to the funeral by car whereas the other students take the bus. Alaskas father attend the funeral and says that the coffin is closed because she wanted it that way. Miles walks up to the coffin and says that he still loves her even though she is dead. He and the colonel grieve. Chapter 36: The eagle asks the colonel at lunch if he had something to do with the fireworks which were set off. He says the Alaska's aunt is coming to clean her room out and he hints that the colonel and Miles can take some things. Miles wants to find the book "The general in his labyrinth" but all of her notes are blurred because of water that flooded her room. They find other notes which led the colonel to the conclusion that she committed suicide. Miles doesn't believe it and he can't stop thinking about how guilty he's feeling. Chapter 37: In Dr. Hyde's class they continue studying religious traditions but he also wants them to have a closer look at the topic of death. He presents Alaska's question and asks the students how they're doing. Chapter 38: The colonel presents his theory about Alaska's death. He thinks that she had a fight with Jake probably and then she freaked out and drove away. Whereas Miles can't believe that because Alaska was with him, making out some time before she drove away. Chapter 39: The colonel and Miles go to the police. They want to find eyewitnesses. A cop tells them that he saw her driving right into the truck. Miles starts believing that she actually might have committed suicide. Chapter 40: Miles states that the more they find the more he hates Alaska. They admit that it's hard to solve the mystery of her death. Chapter 41: The colonel and Miles get into a fight because Miles refuses to talk to Jake. The colonel tells him that Alaska wouldn't have left Jake for Miles. He realises that Alaska turned him into a different person and he starts thinking about the labyrinth he's stuck in now. Miles returns back to the colonel and they apologise to each other. 10. Chapter 42: Miles thinks about what happens after death in connection with Alaska. He and takumi have lunch and Miles apologies to him for cutting him off and leaving him behind. Takumi asks Miles if he's still dating Lara. Chapter 43: Miles, takumi and the colonel want to find out how drunk Alaska actually was. Takumi is still mad at them because they left him out but he joins their plan and they steal a breathalyser from the Eagle's room. While trying out how drunk someone can be with an alcohol content of 24 the eagle comes into their room and catches Miles smoking. After telling him that he's going to be presented to the jury they finally get to the level. At the end they find out that you can not drive or walk in a straight line with that much alcohol in your blood. Chapter 44: Miles is presented to the jury and gets 10 work hours. The Colonel tells takumi all about that night when Alaska died. Chapter 45: After the colonel finally talks to Jake, they find out that Alaska was on the phone with him because they had their 8 months anniversary and she started to freak out. Jake doesn't know why and Alaska told him that she had to go. Therefore Miles and the colonel assume that she was planning for the future. Miles tells takumi that he kissed Alaska and takumi confesses that he also had a crush on her. Chapter 46: Miles and Lara talk and he apologises for being a bad friend and boyfriend. Chapter 47: The colonel and Miles buy cigarettes at a store. The cashier tells them that he's sorry for the girl who died. Chapter 48: Miles finally talks to Lara and he admits to her that he loved Alaska. Lara is not a big of it but she still forgives him. The whole group goes to the smoking hole and they all throw a cigarette into water for a ritual. Miles realises that he's not the only one who loved Alaska, but all of them did. Chapter 49: Miles wants to solve the mystery of Alaska's death. After his religion class he kind of realises that the memory of her won't last forever and that Alaska is kind of leaving him again. Chapter 50: Miles calls his parents on the pay phone and he notices some doodles of flowers. He tells the colonel about and he think that Alaska drew them. Chapter 51: The colonel remembers about a prank that Alaska would have done. It's called the "Subverting the Patriarchal Paradigm". He thinks that they should do this in memory of Alaska. Chapter 52: The colonel plans everything for the prank and explains the group ever detail he came up with. Chapter 53: The prank is to let a a Professor in adolescent sexuality do a speech in front of the school. Therefore Miles calls his dad and tells him to pretend to be that professor. He agrees. 11. Chapter 54: The real person behind that professor is a stripper. During his speech about adolescent sexuality Lara shouts out that he should take off his clothes. The guy starts stripping in front of the school and shouts : "this one is for Alaska young". The Eagle knows who pulled that prank and tells them not to do it again. Chapter 55: The group comes up with a theory about Alaska's death. They state that Alaska's mother died on a 9th January and Alaska on the 10th. While talking to Jake on the phone she realises that she forgot about her mother's death anniversary. She starts to freak out and decides to drive to the graveyard. She doesn't realise that she is too drunk. Chapter 56: Miles and the colonel decide to drive through the same exact place Alaska drove through, at the same speed. They are happy that they get through it alive, they hug and find a sort of inside peace for the first time after her death. Chapter 57: The group spends time together and studies. Chapter 58: Miles thinks about the questions for his essay Dr Hyde gave them. "How will you ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering". He states that all religions carry a message of hope. Chapter 59: Miles still has to finish his final. Takumi leaves and also leaves back a letter for Miles where he states that he saw Alaska on the night of her death and that she told him that she needed to put flowers on her mother's grave and that she forgot. He says that he thought she was just looking for flowers. Miles wants to apologise to takumi but he's already gone. In his final Miles writes about his great perhaps and that he first thought that the way out of the labyrinth was to ignore it. He also states that he will forget Alaska, and she will forgive him for it. He first thought that she was just dead, but now he thinks that part of her "cannot be destroyed" and he hopes it's beautiful where she is now. 12.
