Characterization of John Keating in Dead Poets Society In the novel "Dead Poets Society", written by N. H. Kleinbaum, the static protagonist John Keating, is introduced towards the beginning of the book as the new English teacher of Welton Academy who also graduated there. He seems to be rebellious, due to not respecting the traditions of the school but also charismatic and a genius because of his different teaching style. Mr. Keating is in his early thirties, has brown hair and eyes, is of medium height, and is an average-looking man (p. 6, I. 12-14). Since he "wears a shirt and tie but no jacket” (p. 16, I. 32), Mr. Keating can be called rebellious. It appears that he does not really care about the traditions of the school, making him more modern than the other teachers. When his students try to find him on the school campus, he wears a sport coat and a scarf (p. 31, I. 28-29). Keating is an energetic, enthusiastic, and dramatic person: “He jumped dramatically onto his desk and turned to face the class. "O Captain! My Captain!" he recited energetically" (p. 17, l. 12-13). Also, he tells his students that he possesses a charismatic personality (p. 17, I. 22-23). Mr. Keating believes in the idea of free-thinking (p....

30, l. 16-17), letting the students think for themselves and frequently encouraging them to leave their comfort zone. Moreover, he lets his students refer to him as either Mr. Keating or 'O Captain! My Captain!' (p. 17, I. 17-18). Additionally, he used to be a student at the same school which lets him better understand his students and know what's to be like in their position. In comparison to the other teachers, his teaching style is different and more unique e.g ripping out pages of a book in chapter five saying not everything can be learned from a book. Consequently, this helps the kids have pressure lifted off of them. But another important style of learning is standing on desks to have his students see certain things from a different point of view, thus, leading them to have a new level of confidence. In chapter eight, Mr. Keating pushed Todd to create a poem on the spot, forcing him out of his comfort zone. As a result "he smiled with an air of confidence" (p. 53, I. 20). Furthermore, he leads his students in the revival of the Dead Poets Society, a group of boys who meet in a cave taking turns reading poems in chapter six. After the first class, Pitts described Mr. Keating as weird (p. 19, I. 25) and Knox as spooky (p. 19, I. 27). In the course of the novel, the students start to build trust and look forward to going to his class. In conclusion, Mr. Keating is a charismatic, motivating, and rebellious character who believes in his students and cares for them. Due to his different learning styles, his students find a passion for learning and writing poetry, and leave their comfort zone.
